The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on December 3 aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. The STEP Up program supports this observance and appreciates the fantastic work the Ohlone DSPS Office does to support our students.
National Day of Listening is a national holiday started by StoryCorps in 2008. On the day after Thanksgiving, StoryCorps asks everyone to take a few minutes to record an interview with a loved one. You can use recording equipment that is readily available in most homes, such as computers, iPhones, and digital recorders. StoryCorps also has a free Do-it-yourself Instruction guide.
Click here to browse the 2012 Wall of Listening, which includes stories about family, friendship, growing up, love, military and veterans, teachers and mentors, and many others. What does it mean to listen? This is a great opportunity to ask questions of people in your life such as friends and listen to what they have to say. Examples of questions to ask your friends include:
- What is your first memory of me?
- What was the most difficulty moment in our friendship?
- What makes us such good friends?
- Is there anything you’ve always wanted to tell me but haven’t?
The Do-it-yourself Instruction Guide includes examples of many more questions.
This past Tuesday, STEP UP Ohlone partnered with the Veterans Affairs and Financial Aid offices at Ohlone to host a pizza social for veteran students. Two representatives from the San Jose Vet Center also came to speak with the veterans, letting them know of services available to them. We had a great show of attendance, with some vets bringing their families to meet their fellow students. Look for more socials like these in the future!
Here are some pictures from the event:

Happy Thanksgiving! The holiday season can be a stressful time for many of us—especially as the end of the semester is approaching and finals week is only a few weeks away. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a great page on holiday health and safety tips, which is also available in a festive tune, The 12 Ways to Health Holiday song that you can send in a health e-card to family and friends. The Mayo Clinic also has tips for coping with stress, depression, and the holidays.
