National Day of Listening

National Day of Listening is a national holiday started by StoryCorps in 2008.  On the day after Thanksgiving, StoryCorps asks everyone to take a few minutes to record an interview with a loved one.  You can use recording equipment that is readily available in most homes, such as computers, iPhones, and digital recorders. StoryCorps also has a free Do-it-yourself Instruction guide.

Click here to browse the 2012 Wall of Listening, which includes stories about family, friendship, growing up, love, military and veterans, teachers and mentors, and many others.  What does it mean to listen?  This is a great opportunity to ask questions of people in your life such as friends and listen to what they have to say.  Examples of questions to ask your friends include:

  • What is your first memory of me?
  • What was the most difficulty moment in our friendship?
  • What makes us such good friends?
  • Is there anything you’ve always wanted to tell me but haven’t?

The Do-it-yourself Instruction Guide includes examples of many more questions.
